Lillishall Road, Batoum Gardens
At times a difficult link between floors requires a special geometric configuration. Conventionally, staircases are built in workshops and installed on site. The contractors built these two stairs in West London on the site. Carpenters built the framing and the plasterers laid on the finishes using a sort of stick-and-rag technique.
This geometric stair was designed by Rick Mather; Murray John and Chris Marcou were the carpenter and plasterer. The shape is a perfect spiral of box treads simply linked together and structurally unsound until the mesh and plaster was laid on to form a stiff structural twist form.
