Murray John Architects conserved this beautiful Orangery at Ingress Park for Crest Nicholson in 2001.
Whether to retain, repair or replace can be the most challenging aspect of conservation. If we replace material, then do we renew as it was originally, do we distress the new to match the old or do we weather the old into the new?
This piecing-in of replacement stone by contractor Mott Graves tests this question to the limit. The sharp edges were later weathered properly by building up the old stones with a sacrificial mixture of lime and stone dust to match the old.
